SA3 & Mavericks
-
I made up a TE in KTO Korea to kill two SA3s with Mavericks. The only problem is that the handoff takes too long, and once on the primeter of 10nm the SA3 starts getting ready to shoot. I start handoff at 15nm but for one SA3 it is completed at 10nm for the other no matter how long I wait it keeps saying handoff in process! also the other one does not make RWR make it’s alarming sound about sam being launched. How can I make the handoff sooner and why the RWR doesn’t go off for the other SA3?
Mavericks are the primary reason I use AGM-154’s…

“How can I make the [MAV] handoff sooner” - short answer = you cant.
The handoff for a MAV “D” is about 9nm and the firing range of an SA3 is about 9nm … find another tactic !!!

Don’t use TGP handoff. Lock directly through WPN

yes that was indeed the best tactic, and better to use mark point with TGP so that waypoint is exactly at the target.

As for using WPN, this is basically looking through the seeker head of the MAV and thus your zoom capabilities and polarity options are limited (no TV) - the biggest draw back is finding the EWR and FCR from distances outside 9nm using the views available in the MAV seeker head (WPN MFD).
Like I said use another tactic or a different weapon ;0)
Ironman - good fun this BMS thing isn’t it ;0)

You can still use Mav boresight to align the Mav seeker head and the TGP view its just to skip a TGP handoff so VID target with TGP and have the WPN already pointing spot on. Then instead of point track with TGP as SOI switch WPN SOI and lock on

+1 to comments from Alfred and Oakdesign.
Also, if terrain & threat environment allow, make your approach oblique (SA-3 at 10:00 or 2:00 or so) until you acquire the target with the TGP. Handoff is not necessary. This will help you maintain standoff range.
Plan your cold turn before you go hot.
When you are ready, turn hot, check your keyhole, pickle and go cold.
Also, don’t hesitate to shout “Rifle!!” when you pickle - it startles the SA-3 crews and can make them panic if you are loud enough…

that one needs Sixpack as a copilot , it’s time for BMS to model F-16D

In that case, handoff is necessary, to benefit from the TGP exact positioning of target.

Alfred, don’t feel bad. The Mav Cockpit Dance gets real interesting when the flying telephone poles are around.
Personally, I agree with Oak about using the WPN page when in close. I also, agree with Icer about “shotgun weapons” , but that’s another question.
One thing I haven’t seen mentioned-Use Mav-G. Compared to the D, it has greater range, bigger warhead, and Force Correlation Track with TMS right. -
“Mav-G. Compared to the D, it has greater range,” not sure that’s implemented in BMS ….

it keeps blowing up before it hits he SA3 radar!!

Damn North Koreans hacked the destruct codes!

Guides toward an arbitrary spot on the image (ground / side of building / bridge-span etc). Instead of point-tracking on a heat source.
If you can clearly see the targets as dots on the WPN page view but can’t get a lock on them … try long-press TMS-right (or double-tap? can’t remember) to change to “area” mode.
It might not hit target directly, but with the larger blast/frag warhead, it should be able to damage or destroy non-hardened nearby units (eg. launchers, radars).
It’s a bit cheesy … I would think, in reality, if you can visually resolve a high-contrast shape on the IR image, the weapon could too. Well maybe not in 1980s tech, but surely there have been upgrades since…

It’s an armor penetrating missile though, not a HE.

Exactly, perfect for a bunker buster with it’s delayed fuse.

Good Day, All,
Ironman , The BMS Manuals say 12 miles for D, 15 for G. My past experience has been they do seem modeled that way. I figure any added range is good.
Airtex, FC is TMS right single press until “AREA” shows up on the right side of the Mav WPN page.
Lorik, the fact the Mav G is AP my only concern with using it. My personal view is a 500lb warhead, as opposed to a 150 on the D ( if memory serves) is going to ruin a SAM’s day ,if I can get it close, even if it is AP. And, FC is not my Plan A. But, it’s nice to “have it in your back pocket” when they start shooting at you.
Second opinions on all that are most welcome…
Plus, for what it’s worth, waaaay back (like 4.33-or .34 era) I once did an TE experiment of comparing kill percentage of the HARM vs.Mav G in good old Fox Charlie (I was thinking in SEAD, not DEAD, terms) . I got more kills with Mav. -
Just wanted to remind you that it is very easy to defeat SA-3 with putting it on 3-9 and ECM and then flying in hot and jink left and right. The missile will miss you because it is heavy and fast.

True, K. Plus, one of the cool things about the Vault Threat Guide is it gives “avoidance” tips
