[4.37] Hook landing - Not working on Some capable airbases (S.KOREA)

I think speed matters too. You can’t be going 100-120kts+ from my experience.
I will check my speed next time i try hook during landing.

@regev What speed when engaging the cable?
Remember, this is not a carrier arrestor system, it must be used in emergency only and at the minimum practicable speed. Land on threshold, and try to disipate a maximum of energy with aerobraking. Engage cable at the runway end.good info. i will try it.

Tried to use the hook during landing in CHEONGJU & SUWON (they have cables on runways) but hook never touches the cables, at the start of the runway & at the end.
Hook is down for sure, there is sometimes light effect in the cockpit when the hook is dragging on the runway.
anyone noticed this ?
How did you check that the hook is down ? You are aware than you can lower only ONCE now
If you raise it again it will just lift a little bit but it will be unable to catch a with

i lowered it once during final and i checked it with orbit view, it was all the way down, touching the runway.
Maybe it is a speed issue as being said. -
Hm, I could use the hook for landing at Gunsan just fine. But not at Cheongju (24L), even though my ground speed was ~80 kts at the time, and hook lowered well before the cables. Will do some more tests

yes, also tried the 24L, did not worked.
also problem at Suwon. -
There might be an issue/bug in how the arrestor system is set up at Cheongju.
For comparison, Gunsan has 4 arrestor systems installed - as its chart shows. If you look at Gunsan in the Editor, there are indeed 4 “Arrestor System 5” objects, each corresponding to an arrestor system.
According to the chart, Cheongju also has 4 arrestor systems, two on each runway. But the editor shows 6 “Arrestor System 5” objects. 4 of those are along 24L. So there is a mismatch between how the airbase should be configured and what the editor says is installed.
The arrestor system which seems to be out of order on 24L is embedded in a small forest, not sure if that matters though. Here is a picture from within the editor, showing the arrestor system which I could not hook into:
-
Both Suwon and Cheongju have runways partially on forest tiles with trees, that might be the common factor for why the arrestor systems fail

no it’s probably Data issue on the airbase related with arrestors
-
Could it be the z-value, they are all set to 0.0. If z-value is the elevation of the arrestor system in MSL, and the airbase is at altitude ?
-
[Update]
Made a “hook landing” at OSAN (27R), managed to catch the second wire at the start of the rwy and i was at about 180knots.
So now we know that OSAN & GUNSAN is ok regarding “hook landing”.

@regev Some times when I used a hook for stopping, I have also been at a relatively high speed. It seems to work almost regardless of speed. Which can be helpful if you are coming back in a partly destroyed jet, so the cables ought to be able to catch that. Like on the carrier.
Btw, not a huge fan of the one-time only hook lowering now, is that really realistic ?
-
@jayb yes, it realistic since they are emergency only hooks on the viper.

100% realistic it’s not jacked operated it’s a bottle of air (same bottle as alt gear) that is used to push the spring of the hook. Once pressure released the spring pull the hook a bit to release cable and be able to taxi , bottle cannot be reused then it must be charged again by ground crew and the hook must be reloaded by ground care as well

@Mav-jp Yeah makes sense, found some pictures of the mounting mechanism. It’s a rather crude hinge-based construction
-
Arrestors were working perfect the last time I’ve tested Gunsan and all other bases that I’ve edited.
But they have been touched and tweaked multiple times before the release, possible that some parts have been broken.
It might be an issue with the support points in RunwayList. (?) -
@cougar56th made changes in U2…
Need to check
-
@MaxWaldorf not to the point data. All I did was update the taxiway and taxiway lights and added shelters. I didn’t mess with anything having to do with the arresting wires.
Also I only updated Kunsan so if other bases are not working, it is something else.

Hi Coug!
I was mentioning some much earlier modifications, when the base was converted from the older to the newer implementation. Possibly some data imported from Dev to Rel then adapted and rwny list changes. (?) Way before 4.37 initial release.
Will have a quick look tonight.

I just tested the hook landing at Kunsan runway 18 and it worked fine.
