Engine fire

Heyo!
So, in two out of last four flights, I ended up with engine fire after some time in the air (maybe even an hour into the flight, definitely took a while), bl. 30 and bl. 52.
No idea about the first time, the second time seems I lost oil pressure? Just training flights, no high G, no enemies.
Didn’t have hot starts, but didn’t really do pre-flight checks (EPU and SEC). Is the sim punishing me for skipping them? My wingman (human) had no such issues despite not doing the checks, did I just have bad luck with the random chance of failure because of skipped tests?
If not, what else should I look into?
Cheers!

@dumba Hi, assuming you cold started the jet each time, did you switch the “air source” knob to “norm” position during start-up?

Yes, air source NORM, there was no EQUIP HOT warning.
-
@dumba usually simple diagnostic…
Do you wait 24% rpm?
Have you configured the latch properly? Those are usually the faulty components…
-
@MaxWaldorf Yes and yes; like i said, it caught fire like an hour into the flight, was not a hot start. FTIT was monitored during the start, it was fine.
Any case, my original question still stands, does BMS punish us for skipping tests?

@dumba In the documentation, it is written when tests are “eye candy”

Oh, so the ones not listed as such carry risks with them? Rgr.
-
@dumba If I remember correctly the is a flag in the config for random failures. 2 out of 4 is hardly random but try changing that to 0 and check it on your next flights. set g_bEnableRandomFailures 0

It is per RL checklists. This evecandy comments/mentality in the manuals will be removed with U4.
Two diffenent approaches how to handle it:
If you wanna start the jet like in RL, do this step. If you avoid this step, this also works to get the jet starting. -
@Micro_440th Cheers!

@Micro_440th I don’t get it: does this mean in U4 tests are no longer optional ? I think there is value in knowing the test has no effect on the sim. Personally, I always skip them and feel safe as the manual tells me I can do it. If there is no longer any note in the doc, by default everything becomes “mandatory”

Well, I’m a nerdy kinda guy, I don’t skip anything on my checklist, if it’s eye candy or not. Good for muscle memory as I’m sure that one day, everything is working correctly. Also teach my pilots in my virtual unit the same thing, don’t skip anything.
@dumba, you mentioned that this occurred about one hour into your flight. I’m just speculating here, but did you apply the anti-ice switch to norm? After 4.37 was implemented in my unit, a pilot that did a new version conversion flight and forgot to switch this button to norm and at high altitude, things went from bad to worse in a very short time.
-
@NIL I most definitely did NOT touch anti-ice; it was set as whatever it is by default. What’s the default position, AUTO? Any case, hadn’t noticed ICE warning.
@Micro_440th so was that a definitive YES, skipped tests cause failures? Sorry for repeating myself, reading your reply again I am still slightly unsure. TIA!

No, skip this test doesnt causes a failure.
-
@Micro_440th I meant the other tests, not marked with ‘eye candy’. Apologies for taking up your time, and thanks for quick replies!

All good mate.
Yes, if you skip certain tests, you get a failure.
To be clear here: I recommend executing all tests and procedures via manuals/CL’s. Shortcuts are not recommended but possible. -
did you accidentally hit the random error key combo (alt+c : r) perchance?
Or small arms fire? did you have an AVTR recording?

Clear as day now!

There’s a non zero chance of course, but I think not. It IS dangerously close to alt+c: f, though, so yeah, something to keep an eye out for. Good catch!

No ground fire, training TE with no enemies.
But since I skipped some tests which can cause in flight failuers, as @Micro_440th explained just above, I guess my question is cleared up!

Over-speed (beyond 800KIAS) ?
