well we r over simplifying things…
DCS is a respected company with very good results. As much as I don’t like DCS and I tease - poke them all the time and I like it this is because I’m a satyr.
As I always say there is no actual comparison between DCS and BMS.
Yes they are on the same category GAME war flight sim and it’s easy to start point by point comparison.
BUT
DCS is a commercial company.
BMS is a company of friends for free.and this means BMS doesn’t care what DCS does to see them as direct competition. Even though some members might see it that way and maybe even act such well we all are errors making humans. It’s a human behavior. As a whole though BMS works way differently than a commercial company would do. The general rule is that each works on what he loves - likes.
Now if ppl and understand and comprehend this then whatever they say about comparing DCS and BMS are out of context and what they say makes no sense.
Both have their good and bad.
What BMS has good we say yea but see DCS doesn’t have it. and vice versa with the old lady with no teeth as BMS was described cause of lack of gfx.
bms are elitist bastards that play it hardcore and above all…
DCS is a censorship machine when you criticize them…
On DCS plus vote they delivered a single variant of F-16 in a considerable small amount of time… small cause if you take a look at BMS time still things are added for the F-16, well for all the F-16 variants but hey it’s 26 years of development and still adding, and have more to add??? yea it’s called free time. You see with this last how easy is to get in to a direct comparison. And all those stupid and wonderful things being recycled over the decades of both BMS and DCS.
Thankfully both have their maturity and focus.
Things go sideways some times, recent example on ED and the many times that BMS team of falcon team was dead and non existing anymore… etc etc…
Those will come again and again as users and circumstances bring them up…Users will continue with the no sense and base comparison as always…
The end point is user experience. in personal level do you enjoy it? either BMS or DCS well enjoy it and don’t make it a Jihad… there is no point. U r eager for features??? well don’t go Jihad up your sleeves and actively join the effort.
So as the thread tittle says yes it’s a golden era for BMS as it was always from the very beginning only this time in my personal opinion it’s more bright as more things get addressed, new members with full passion and love are added and bring magic with new features and address issues of the past.
That’s all from a former bms dev team member.

@Ollie22 I think after 4.38 bms will win out in the looks too.
I’d be surprised if we can actually “win out” over DCS in terms of looks, we have a long way to go there with lighting, clouds and other things, but what we will have is “good enough” graphics paired with all the other things that BMS does so incredibly well!! Doubt DCS will ever have AI, ATC or a campaign like we have.
I mean heck, the theaters we have in BMS absolutely dwarf even the biggest maps in DCS, so expecting the same or better quality there was always gonna be a stretch, and I’m more than happy to compromise on a bit of eyecandy for that!
The so far released images about 4.38 suggest me that MANY 3rd party theaters will be released in the same time with 4.38. Which are far larger can Korea ATM as I can recall.
BTW you do not need a larger theater than what Korea has. If you check the boundary edges of the map you can see that it is VERY large. Just the most of action in the stock theater is happens is a 200x300 km size region or even smaller. But in fact the map is far, far larger than this. For a sim where tactical fighters are the main actors you simply do not need a larger theater than this.

I believe they have said 3rd party theatre builders will have to wait for release of 4.38 before they will get access. So it will be long wait for theatres other than the official 4.

Here you can see om the latest screenshots that many of them is not Korea and it is 100%.
Korea does not have any kind of desert and high cliffs near to any coastline.

Applying the 555x555 nm size what I could measure on Korea interactive map.
Even war a Cold War theater would be suitable with a small fantasy if we wish to add at lest on airbase on the edge of UK. Of course some of longer range sq. also should be closer what was in RL in Poland but this is fine for a really large campaign.

Close a 64seg theater with 16 tiles = 1024 × 1024 cause tiles are 1x1km
-
@molnibalage Thats because 4.38 will release with 4 theatres. Balkans KTO ITO and CET. At least that’s what they have said they are doing. Israel certainly has desert. They have also said 3rd party don’t get access until after release and expect long waits for their theatres . Wish I could direct you to the thread but I cant find it.
-
@molnibalage only official BMS supported theaters might be ready by release of 4.38 but not sure

With all this well deserved attention, do you think Falcon 4 will stay cheap for long? (because is not free) I don’t think so. But it won’t be as expensive to fly as the other sims.

Yes. No matter how we love BMS4 we are not speaking about millions of users. F4.0 is a retro game, its price it set according to this. No matter the BMS4.38 or any other BMS. It would be VERY strange to set up 60 EUR price as for a AAA game or even just 30 EUR (indie level) just because of BMS. BMS4 exist since 2011, and Falcon 4.0 only became cheaper and it is many times in sold in bundle with the F3.0 and Falcon AT.
For only 10 EUR… -
@Ollie22 Good AI is just the tip of the ice berg. It’s how everything that exists integrate so nicely with everything. From mission planning and package setup to how it actually plays out with ATC and AI flights.
It’s beautiful.Yesterday during a flight I could hear how the flight lead (AI) was instructing his flight to line up in a specific patter, they took off, was handed off from the tower and formed up and started their flight over to the AO.

@Arty I’m wondering if my current rig will be able to handle 4.38 in VR at an acceptable frame rate, I haven’t tried 4.37 VR yet as I have just about got my VR headset (Quest 2). I want to stick with my rig at least another year or 2. I still have my TrackIR though in case it doesn’t work out
-
I cannot wait for 4.38. Built a new pc (7950x3d + 4090) so all i can say is bring it on!
-
@WurminatorZA well don’t we all???
but this is a negative reason for further development.
we can’t stick to yesterday hw and at the same time ask for things of tomorrow. The team is already making superb work on optimizing things up and squeezing every bit and byte it can in order to deliver better performance with new features, but at some point we can’t ask them to deliver 4.38 compatible with ZX Spectrum + hw. (I have one lol )
U know that VR is super demanding so it needs and the appropriate hw and even more in order to be “kinda” ready for a few features more but not for major gfx changes. -
@Mike-0 Ok I get your point, the upgrade has also to do with adding 2 more projectors.
So in total it will come to:
1 ATD
2 MFD
1 CPD
3 projectors (for that 180deg fov)Right now my fps dip sometimes, but being the pragmatic guy as I am, I was thinking to go in the direction of i9-14900 with a RTX4090.
The current pc has been faithfully running for 10+ years now -
TBF I’m not sure 14th gen i9 is right answer, unless you have socket 1700 platform already or you have some special application that utilises those e-cores. It’s hot, power-hungry and not that much faster than 13th gen i7. From gaming perspective R7 7800X3D is much better choice.
Also it’s not the best moment to upgrade, by the end of this year there’ll be out at least new AMD Zen5 CPUs, possibly at least glimpse of Intel 15th gen CPUs (rumored to be much faster than 14th gen), most likely new generation of AMD GPUs and RTX 5090 and maybe 5080.
If you have a rig that is capable of running BMS I’d wait and see what those new components will bring to the table and then buy previous gen cheaper or get new ones if performance/price will be worth it. -

Let me get my crystal ball…
Nothing at all from stopping the current owners from hiking the price of F4.0 and they could well price it at $60-$80 and BMS would still be “competitive” in terms of what it offers. However, F4.0 != BMS. I would like to say that the majority of the market of F4.0/BMS already has it and those on the fence or potential new customers would only be a handful, so increasing the price may result in less sales.@Xeno said in A golden era ahead for BMS:

This. By the time 4.38 comes out, we may have new CPUs out and the 50XX lineup will definitely be out so it’ll be a good time to compare. I’m not opposed to buying new toys but with a limited budget, it’ll be nice to avoid unnecessary purchases, or at least have a better idea of performance gains before spending the money.
