Mavericks, Not just for ground targets?
-
I was doing some low level under the clouds maverick training in a training TE under full on combat conditions. I had come around for my 2nd pass and low and behold a KA-50 flies right in to view in my TGP and commences to fire missiles in to my ground forces. Well I couldn’t stand for that and I went ahead and tried for a point track on him and I immediately got a good track and hand-off on him and a solid cursor so I let him have it! I kept him in view until the mav made a good impact on him. I still had 4 mavs left but I couldn’t wait so I ended the mission there to check the debrief and it did register as an AA kill. I was video capturing the training mission at the time. I messed up and only took a screenshot of the debrief for the mav event list and did not get a screenshot of it showing it as air kill.
Here is the video link.
Edit: I did find this though,

Hi!
Not just for ground targets?
What you did is quite the same helo pilot does with their own A-A missile, so i think there was no reason it couldn’t work .
Helo pilot could use , for example , the TRIGAT missile (Tiger Helos) , that is basically an A-G missile , but that is used by the helos to shot down other helos , the same way you did .

Very impressive!
-
A true target of opportunity! Couldn’t pass on trying to get a kill on it when the opportunity was placed before me like that!
-
That’s pretty awesome.
I believe …. second or third hand rumor … that the gold standard is shooting down your own wingman with a HARM. Elevates you to a whole new level of legendary.

Yes the story goes all the way back to Frugals World and has become legendary in Falcondom! Although I am not acquainted with this individual I do know he is fond of cats wearing melon helmets, and occasionally graces us with his presence on this forum nowadays.

Awesome might!!

Apparently this has happened IRL as well.
During the Gulf War, the HARM was involved in a friendly fire incident when the pilot of an F-4G Wild Weasel escorting a B-52 bomber mistook the latter’s tail gun radar for an Iraqi AAA site. (This was after the tail gunner of the B-52 had targeted the F-4G, mistaking it for an Iraqi MiG.) The F-4 pilot launched the missile and then saw that the target was the B-52, which was hit. It survived with shrapnel damage to the tail and no casualties. The B-52 was subsequently renamed In HARM’s Way.
Maybe the Gorn was involved in this incident as well.

IBA
In Before Aragorn.

Man, that story is so old, you’d think the Internet would have forgotten about it by now. Poor guy is not ever gonna live it down. They’ll probably put it on his epitaph.

Decided to go chopper hunting with mavs to see if you could do this with intent and not just do it as a target of opportunity. I fired mavs 3 and 4 at the same target thinking mav 3s WPN page cursor went flashing just as I fired. Mav 4 wasn’t needed as mav 3 did end up being a good hit on it’s target. All kills did register as AA kills. Screenshot of debrief below.

Brilliant!
