Hud-projection mod

great job,sheep meat:headb:

Haha it’s been a long time since I last worked on the HUD!
As people mentioned my previous mod I thought I needed to jump out…
Obviously CrazyTom and FanofBMS have put in tremendous effort into making the HUD as realistic as possible, that’s hundreds of hours more than I had invested. Salute to you guys and big thanks!!
However, no offence at all but their mod was not really going in the direction where I’d personally preferred, so I have been using my own slightly adjusted version ever since…
In Version 2 of my HUD mod the projection shape is fine-tuned to fit most HUD symbologies including DED data and NO RAD message under default 3 view(considered for those without TrackIR), though the AMRAAM bore circle is still partially cut off on the top(not sure about how it is in RL)… The projection circle might be slightly bigger than in RL, but I think that’s the best compromise I could achieve. Also the green tint is made more subtle now, as not often do you turn your HUD brightness so high that the green disk clearly stands out against broad daylight. I have also managed to blur the top flat edge a bit for a more natural look as that’s the farthest projected part… I haven’t put any purple tint onto the HUD glass because as far as I know Block 50 which BMS simulates does not have that.
A picture is worth a thousand words.:) Haven’t got the DDS files now I’ll upload later…
Looking forward to this upload.
Cheers

Same here and on BMS side…

It actually does have a light tint (this is mandatory for proper reflection on the glass)
Could you please make a version just including a very light purple tint on the entire glass like in my real pictures and send it to me via MP for future BMS version?

I think the tint and the yellow circle are dependent on the model and exact HUD system. MLU variants seems to be extreme with both respects while others not so much or not at all.
In this USAF viper picture there no tint, or it’s really weak (look at the sky, I can’t see a color shift). It does look a bit darker but not colored. And there is no yellow circle with the HUD on and looking directly into itSame in this HAF F-16 video , darker but not colored and no yellow circle.
Another USAF:

Bang on I’d say.

I don’t have the mood atm, but can verify with videos:
USAF Block 50/52s: Black to brownish tint/ slightly dark tintBlock 40/40s: Either front brown, next glass (to pilot) violet or both browsnihs, dark…
This is the Block I have the least knowledge about.Aegean AF Block 50/50/+: Violet tint
And a strong one!
Block 30/32s: Dark to brownish.Belgian/Netherlands MLUs: Dark/brownish tint.
IAF: No clue
Polish Air Force: No clue
RNoAF: MLUs, HUD seemed US Air Force Block 50 style.
Brownish means at some angles the colour looks that way.
Some of the reference for HAF/USAF etc is in this very thread!
How do I know? Spent the entire FreeFalcon dev/team/ research testing time searching for F-16 videos on an almost daily basis and watched ca 100-200-300 cockpit vids plus gained all photo reference I could get including here at BMS.:D
And I read about it.Anyone who says most Block 50s and above do not have tint has no clue.
BTW: I did NOT create any of the 3993.dds which make the circle! The only thing I did was take one of the former IT versions (with incorrect reflection on top) and modify its colour. And earlier make my own version which only relates to non TIR and Aegean Vipers.
Also, as good your work seems, master fatcap (cheers mate!), the circle IMHO still is too big compared to real HUD photos. Make that one smaller and it rocks.Cheers

PS: FOr the reference, FanOfBMS432’s mod is not only a colour mod, it is also a model mod. He gave the HUD a more real model incl. the seperation at the bottom (Where the HUD meets the ICP) and a new top line.
If you flew his model for a couple of weeks you will not want to go back, simply looks more plastic. -
Can the hud tints be reflections from the canopies? Cant see why the hud glass would have any color.

No. The colour is there to help the pilot read the HUD at all times AFAIK.
ATM really not in the mood since my usual HUD research binge takes 2-3 hours and I deleted most links and references…but I could clearly show you it is there (the tint). Maybe skip the past 10-12 pages of this thread…
Of course not every F-16 variant has the tint, and of course as well I do not know about Air Forces like the Israeli Air Force.
E.g. Early Block 30s do not have a tint and also some later Blocks.
I doubt you will find many F-16 cockpits which are 100% identical anyway, so many versions and mods.Cheers!

I think we all need to chip in and buy the BMS team an F-16C.
-
I just bought myself an hour freeetime…
Here just some random shots I pulled out of one of my photo folders, some collected here at BMS:Video of RNLAF (Netherland) F-16MLU

Danish Air Force MLU
You can also research the other like e.g. HAF, you will find one video with the F-16CJ with fully violet HUD e.g.
From HAF F-16C+ video, BLock 30 or 32

Greek F-16CJ
HAF F-16CJ+
Unknown, I assume Turkish AF F-16CJ or USAF F-16CJ HUD
F-16CG USAF
And so on…I really could prove it further.
Also check what other modern Air Force jets like the Rafale or latest Hornets have…yes, tinted HUDs, correct.;)Chrs…if there is irregularity in terms of F-16s not using tinted HUDs it would rather be the exception.
So far I have only seen HAF F-16s and F-16CGs with violet tinted HUDs, rest darkish.
No tint, only results for that I found is for earlier F-16A/C+ and IAF F-16s as per IT team’s info.
Rest all seem to have a coating on the HUD. -
10 minutes search over ViperPits would save you dozen of hours searching for pictures and try to understand whats going on… I’ll be back later.
-
The circle on the first pic looks like a reflection of the projector glass thingy?
Exactly.
It does look a bit darker but not colored.
Yep … or just a bit darker … as he want. It is just in order to render the polarized glass. so, violet, pink, purple, brown … I do not really care … just have something rendering the glass “opacity/tint”
And there is no yellow circle with the HUD on and looking directly into it
This is just a question of reflexion and where the sun is … that’s all. I have a HUD in my C-160, the reflexion of the lens (circle) is sometimes visible, sometimes not… depending on “sunlight” direction. By night, the glow is depending on HUD’s brightness setting, but if it is visible, is means that brightness setting is too hight.
@Fatcap … Please, just add a small tint to the glass, purple or just grey/brown … whatever… But nothing more than you’ve already done please! No other extra reflexion of canopy or anything else! I would be very pleased if you could do that for us!

This post is deleted! -
The canopy has a coating to absorb radar ie make sure the pilots smile doesnt return radar i guess that can have a tint that could be reflected on the hud?

Greek F-16CJ
Tom very similar HUD color can be seen on IAF F-16Is and it’s somewhat misleading. I’ve walked several times around the aircraft and the apparent tint changes with perspective / lighting from magenta to green to clear. From the pilot’s perceptive AFAIK it is clear. IAF F-16Cs don’t show this tint from any angle and again from the pilot’s perspective are clear.
These are all F-16Is - notice how the tint changes with perspective and lighting:

the color thing is covered already and if I’m not mistaken its included in ITO latest update… sorry cant recall the modder, i believe its in my Arty’s hot list thread, and at the all mods thread…

Hey Tom thanks for the suggestion but as I said that was a compromise made to consider for those who can’t utilize 6DOF. If it were made smaller, unwanted clipping of the symbologies under default frontal view would occur which definitely won’t be nice. On a side note I think MLUs as in Deejay’s pic have a slightly different HUD system compared to US Block 50s (smaller projector?), I can’t justify that with hard fact so anyone who knows please feel free to correct me.
Please see the attached pics, second one is not from a Viper but I suspect they’ve used a very similar HUD.
