Working on Missile Evasion.

Generally using the term of “missile” is simply not true. You cannot see a BVR AAM visually. Never. From 15-20 km very likely you cannot see even the smoke of the missile and after engine burnout is no person on the Earth who could visually spot an AAM or even a bit larger SAM. When they try to pick up usually it meant ONLY by the strong smoke, nothing else…
Yeah, thats what I remember reading. Thanks!

If we want to keep eye ball realism (with or without Track IR) padlock is simulating the real “eye ball lock” on a moving picture (contrast) wich is not correctly rendered by screen. Below a given distance (IMO, about 2 to 4Nm) in relation with the object size, padlock is more realist and conformal than without (even when using TIR).
what im saying is do padlock but do it manually(for track ir users) as in realitu.and padlock at a realistic distance as u say. its cos i see many videos with people zooming in and stuff.

Once rocket engine is out or if no smoke, you wont see anything except maybe 1/2s to 2s before dying.
EDIT: As explained by Molni.
Nevertheless, a fighter pilot is still going to try to pick something up, be it the smoke trail or whatever, so stating that they won’t even try is incorrect.

Nope. Smoke trail or nothing.
The size of an incoming missile with its enormus relative speed is far beyond the resolution of the human eye not mentioning the reaction time the pilot + AC. Even you have the best sight in the world and detec a 0.2-0.8 m diameter size object from 2-3 km you cannot do any evasive turn… (Largest SAM even built and used is 5V28E missile of S-200/SA-5). Relative speed can be M3-M6 between missile and you. This means about 900-1800 m/s. Good luck for any evasion… This is why so freakin dangerous the Patriot and S-300/S-400, they are very fast and you cannot see where they come. You can guess the moment of launch - regardless lack of launch warning by RWR - but nothing else.

This is why there are manuals Cf BMS Manual, 9.6.2.6.
There it is, thanks! I have been reading the operation manual, To many dam manuals to keep up with

You probably better know than me.

Sam’s can be seen, especially at night (NVG on).
Once u track by eye the missile chasing u, combined with RWR . . . u can put it on your six, and run.
Very difficult to track AA missiles by eyes (i don’t use padlock feature, seems to me not realistic), rely on RWR and position of the enemy aircraft, again put it on your six, and run.
-
You need to know something about the missile coming at you - in general you still want to pull it to your 3/9 line - not your six - and assess. Then make the appropriate move. Moves…

Regarding SAM’s…
If you recon and pre-brief the mission (even if you are playing SP, you should pre-brief yourself) and pay attention to the RWR, there is no need for padlock. Once the launch tone goes off you should already have an idea in your head about what just launched and from where, and your the escape route…How close am I to the launch site? What is my energy status? Do I try to out run? Notch? Jettison stores? Soooo much to cover, and it has all been covered before.
SA is your best buddy. Know what you are up against. Take control of your squadron and plan your own missions wisely. Don’t try to take out an airbase that is protected by SAM’s w/o taking out the Radars first. There are plenty of stand-off weapons available for this and the runway will be there for the next mission.
Most of all keep practicing. There is nothing more fun in this sim than when you have a good BFM fight w/ a SAM. On a few occasions when thinking, “this is it” and waiting for the BOOM, I have looked over my shoulder to see a SAM that has run out of fuel close in, hang in formation like a wingman, and then float off behind me. I once watched a SA-4 fly abreast with me at 3’oclock for about a half mile and detonate harmlessly. In every case, I never use padlocking…it’s more about knowing when to run and when to react.
A-A missiles are a different ball game…
Your not going to see a ARH missile unless it is bearing down on your canopy. Your best choice here is to out run and out turn it. SARH missiles are usually defeated with a well timed notch. You will usually only see a heater shot from your six, so be ready with the flares and pray you have enough airspeed for a high G turn.
This is all based on my experiences in the sim. None of this is real world advise, as I have none.
