There have been a couple recent discussion threads on various techniques … this one covers most of the bases. Sounds like what you describe was the behavior in 4.35.0 (I can’t remember if 4.34 was different).

Personally, I usually end up using FCR in GM mode to try to establish a markpoint on (something) within a few square-miles of the emitter (paying attn to the bullseye coords on the HAD and FCR… but also minding the error-range on the HAD which can be significant).
Then I scan around that area, with FCR and TGP to try to sort the radars from the launchers and trucks/bldgs etc, and create a more refined markpoint…
This is a little more flexible for day/night/weather and uneven terrain, and not requiring flying directly at the site, compared to the HUD-markpoint technique.
