4.33.1 will release shortly: what you need to know and how to be prepared

Great News !! A Big “THANKS” to all involved in the entire process.
One Question:
Will the Addon Theaters already relesed for 4.33 (Israel, Balkan, Korea2012) work with 4.33-1 -
My Windows 8.1 system makes registry entries for my Microprose F4 installation on my USB stick; will that be sufficient for the new installation routine detection process? Will the 4.33.1 launcher require the physical CD (obviously not for Steam installs) to be present in the drive to start?
The stick will be in place when I launch the new versions of BMS 4.
Thanks for making F4 available to the community; this is a small price to pay for such a great simulator!

EDIT: Problem solved by installing in Windows 10 Safe Mode.
I have been trying to install the original Falcon 4.0 from CD on my Windows 10 x64 system. Regardless of whether I’m starting the autorun.exe directly from the CD, from a copy of the CD on my local harddrive, from an .iso created of the CD, or via LAN from the CD inserted into my laptop, after clicking on “Set Up Falcon 4.0” in the autorun menu, nothing happens (except I can see that the “32-bit Setup Launcher (32-bit)” becomes listed in the Task Manager under Processes). Running Setup.exe directly yields the same result.
I have tried setting autorun.exe and Setup.exe to run as administrator and in any compatibility mode available without success.
On the contrary, on my laptop which is still running Windows 7, I can install the game just fine directly from CD without fiddling with compatibility settings.
Has anyone been able to install the game onto a Windows 10 x64 system using the original CD, and if so, how?
If this is not possible, would BMS 4.33.1 work if I just copied the Falcon 4.0 folder installed on my Laptop to my PC?

On my side and on my desktop computer, I’ve tried to install from an ISO of my original CD. No joy, it didn’t worked. Then tried to re-install directmy with the original DC ROM, and then, no prob.
Running on Windows10 x64
Will try now with another original CD ROM on my Laptop … will keep you advised.
If this is not possible, would BMS 4.33.1 work if I just copied the Falcon 4.0 folder installed on my Laptop to my PC?
Of course no, it won’t work.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just download it from gog or steam on the server itself? After all it needs it’s own licensed copy anyway.
Sure, I’ll check if gog requires some sort of client (I’m not going to install steam on the server).
Thanks for the hint!

I have always an .iso on our server for installation purposes. After mounted installation works flawless.
-
On a hunch I tried to install the game in Window 10 Safe Mode, which worked (tried installing both from an .iso and directly from the CD). The game crashes just after the main menu becomes visible, but I suspect this won’t be a problem for running 4.33.1.
Thanks to those who helped.

It does not require any client, neither to download nor to play, and their “Galaxy” client is 100% optional. All games available on GOG can be downloaded directly through browser as simple .exe installers, often split into smaller parts if the game is large (many GBs) for easier downloading, but in case of Falcon 4.0 it’s less than 400MB single installer file.

Weapons armed…
Bought the GOG package (my original CD is buried for the moment in a bunch of moving boxes).
Installed without problems under Win10 x64 Pro (Executed the installer as administrator). It’s just an installer, no separate client needed.
The only thing I altered was, that I did not install into C:\GOG Games\Falcon 4.0 but in C:\Falcon4
The simulation starts and works. Tried not really much, 'cause I have a working BMS 4.33 running…
Frame rate seems to be bad, but that may be the result of that very old game. BMS runs on my rig very smooth. So, I am ready for 4.33.1
Regards and happy easter,
Joerg

I’m about 99.9% that this can be done without installation for win 10 but in this case wouldn’t be efficient to check for the original cd? and not an installation. This way guys with win10 and original cd will be troubled.
Did anyone tried compatibility mode for installation? -

Did anyone tried compatibility mode for installation?I gues the problem doing it this way is that the installer wouldn’t know if it was looking at an image on a virtual drive or an actual cd in the tray so doing this would open up the installer to anyone with an image (which they may not legally own)

I really don’t see the big deal here. At absolute worst, its $10 to fly this sim. There should be no complaints at all.
-
Yeap you are very right.
For me no issue. win 10 ain’t a problem and since I have the original cd I will do my trick for win10 on my work laptop.

As an aside: please know that the BMS team has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to discussion or use of anything other than legitimate, licensed copies of Falcon 4.0 for use with Falcon BMS.
Don’t do it, don’t encourage it, and don’t enable it.
Keep in mind that legitimate copies are readily available again now and for a tiny fraction of the cost of the system you need to run the game. No one is required to buy a new copy – if you own one of the originals (I have three copies myself ;)) that will work fine. However, there is simply no excuse for not owning a legitimate copy anymore.
Put another way: you jeopardize the ability of the BMS team to keep improving Falcon BMS in future if you go around the requirement for owning a legit copy of the game before you install and run Falcon BMS.
That is why we have zero tolerance.
Let’s not speculate about how the installer works.
It would be a shame to risk missing the release of 4.33.1 after waiting for so long.

OK, first real clarification that matters. Above I wrote:
That’s not really necessary and in fact doing that when you are trying to install Falcon 4.0 on a 64-bit copy of Windows is possible but it requires some technical gymnastics that simply aren’t worth the trouble. The executable that patches an older Falcon 4.0 version up to v1.08 is not directly runnable on modern 64-bit Windows.
Both the original hard-copy and newer soft-copy versions of the game allow you to install a version of Falcon 4.0 that will work. Running the version 1.08 patch exe is not required to support Falcon BMS installation and running.
Sorry if that caused any confusion.
Boxer,
Please send along to the Team and Tommo my sincere thanks, as well. I’ll install 4.0 tonight(if it isn’t already in there). The 4.0 thing sounds like a case of it has to be installed, doesn’t have to run?
I seem to remember some issues when I tried running it, in the pre-BMS days -
Thats why I kept my almost 20 years old original (!) CD. A huge THANK YOU to the BMS team!
Have a fantastic Falcon day.

Boxer,
