In RL AAR do pilots refuel in the turn?
-
Hello Forum.
While I can manage to latch on in the turn (only occasionally), any Youtube video I’ve seen shows the tanker straight and level.
Just wondering……

There are some videos with the tanker in the turn.

I just uploaded a video which happens to include aerial refueling containing taking fuel in the turn. Refueling footage begins at around 4:20 mins. in, and ends about 12 in to the video, you can find the video here, post #190.

Yes we refuel in the turn.
During Kosovo the AR tracks were very small and we were in almost a constant bank the entire track. Not a big deal except for the F-117. -
Hi Boomer135
I like the “we” there……couldn’t open the attachment unfortunately.

Sure.
But no contact/disconnect allowed turning the banking/wing levelling manoeuvre (bank angle modification).

hard to believe but it’s easier for me to hook up in a turn, maybe because I have to keep some back pressure on the stick.

Hi Nigel!

It makes sens to me.
When I was Ajet pilot I was used to set a bit of pitch down trim when flying in close formation because it is more comfortable, precise and easy to easy the pressure to do slightly down rather than pushing the stick a bit.
(But I don’t do it in BMS.) -

Ditto!

Well done Nigel, hooking in the turn is no mean feat.
I agree, constant back pressure on the stick is the trick.Bayonet

I have a video of me hooking up in the turn with no HUD somewhere.
- look for “Viper 2-2 cleared…” in the description

Great video, AAR in the turn made to look so easy. The close flying was a master class. Formation landing with a 0.0 yardstick, as you said yourself “* awsome”.
Thanks.

Heya,
Thanks for the kind words. It’s a heck of a lot easier when you have a great Flight Lead to fly off, and Leech (my number one here) is one of the best - he deserves 50 percent of your praise.
Cheers, appreciate it

If you have trouble with turning AAR, you should try the Kiwi way (jump to 0:35) :
