Fishy explosions are FPS Killer?
-
Yes those explosions cause huge FPS drop at close range. There’s no configuration problem.

what is your in game multi sampling at……no game, especially F4 /w BMS addon need SLI 32xQ CSAA Antialiasing…try moving the ingame slider from 7 to 4…which on my card is x8 AA…i believe…this has made BMS run extremely smooth on my quad core /w 2x 260’s…why your better rig with a better card is having problems is beyond me.
i know lowering some setting is not what many ppl with great pc want to hear…but I’ll say it again
No game on the planet, especially F4 /w BMS addon needs SLI 32xQ CSAA Antialiasing ……x8 AA and x8 (or x16) AF is more then enough eyecandy for most if not all games out today
try this and see if it helps at all…I have virtually no shutters and great FPS, and no jaggies…matter of fact, the only time i see any FPS differences is when alot (and i mean alot) of targets are destroyed at the same time, such as a massive bombing run, but never with mid air explosions from A2A…
As for the look of the ugly explosion…thats how it looks in bms…the ejection/parachute animation are pretty bad too…its the game, not your pc
I dont think its the partical system giving you problems as much as I think this old game is being pushed beyond the limits of what it was originally designed for…and running at lvl 7 setting ingame makes for extra rendering that you cant see any differents in anyways
another idea is what do you have your Antialiasing-Transparency at…multi sampling or super sampling…or off…this reduces jaggies in pixels that have any lvl of transparency in them…like smoke and such ( i think )…if you have this on super sampling it might be bogging you down and creating shutters…try changing this to multi or just off…bet you dont notice any difference in quality with a reduction in shutters when aircraft explode
if none of this helps at all,…well…, I just dont know…
also…I read somewhere that you need to either set your gpu setting ingame or in the nividia control panel….not both….it will just fight with itself if you have AA set in both and you will get bad FPS and shutters…for me it works best to use the ingame settings…but many ppl say to turn it off ingame and use your gpu’s control panel to override game setting for best results…you will have to try both and see what works best for your system
mabey this will help…mabey not…either way, good luck

Updating DirectX (DX9) or graphics drivers may help.
-
When I was setting up my install, I initially had the same problem, 5 FPS or lower near any explosions. Since properly adjusting and tuning the install, I can fly right through an explosion with no effect. You need to be looking at the settings. I use multisampling at 2 in game, shaders, and shadows. and also experiment with settings in nvidia inspector. There is no one rule for all, you will need to find the best balance for your hardware. But it should eat Falcon when you get the sweet spot. I get pretty much 50 - 60 FPS all the time.

Anything beyond Multi-sampling level 2 is a waste… this is taken with quality 2 and AF x16 forced from in driver level:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v40/i_hawk/IAFF-16D.jpg(Both of course at jpeg quality, original screen was much better)
I think quality 2 is same as x4 or x8 Anti-aliasing on driver level.

What EXACTLY do you mean by that? GFX wise it’s DX9, similar to any other DX9 game you know, especially if you put the Particle system under the scope, it’s not difference than PS in other games (maybe just the lack of animations which makes no real difference in rendering efficiency).
-
I recommend, as a fix, that you not fly through explosions.
-
So is quality 0 the best or 7 ??? In the graphics settings in game.
-
7 is best, … recommended is 2.
Cheers,

As long as shaders are on on my rig any smoke and explosion from short distance cause huge FPS drop.
!!! … With a “i5-2400S 2.5GHz, HD7850 2GB, 16 GB RAM” !!!???
Here is my hardware:
Asus P5KC
Core 2 DUO E8600 3.33Ghz
3.25Go RAM CORSAIR HIGH VALUE 800Mhz XMS2 6400
GeForce GTX260 896Mo GDDR3No “huge” FPS drop even if using standard default particles effect! … I do never drop below 25 FPS!

Off topic, but the vapor over the wings in that pic I-Hawk look better here… or am I seeing things I want to see?
Nice pic either way.
-
fps is going to be affected with resolution as well lads, especially when things start to get intense, a larger screen res. will probably experience a bigger hit than a lower resolution in the exact same hardware config. which a lot of people seem to neglect when complaining about fps.
-
@Demo… yes you see what you want to see…
Or maybe not? (pic was posted long time ago in an ITO thread BTW)
@Molni - your CPU is a weak i5, IMHO it would better for you to upgrade to 2500K and OC it to ~4.3-4.4GHz, or you can get 3570K if your MB supports…
@Moort - We assume most people are running 1920x1080, if someone is running higher res than that on main screen and/or external displays then he should expect lower frames with same config.
-
1920x1080? Looks like I need a new monitor. I’m on 1280x1024 and the MFDs and DED are illegible scribbles when at the default 60* FOV.
With that resolution and the HD7850 that DeeJay mentioned in that link he posted my FPS drop in explosions is barely noticeable.

1920 * 1080 is imo, the minimum for this sim.
-
Not bragging, but I run at 2560 x 1920 and have no problems with FPS and explosions. The OP deffo needs to tweak settings……
-
You do have SLI 580, which is a bit different beast.
But admitted: the fill rate (amount of rendered pixels = resolution) is not BMS killer. (Unless supersampling and within smoke!) There are other factors that can be tuned very well. Turn off HDR, per-pixel and shadows, and tune down AA settings, and most any system can run BMS well.
The actual tricks to do depend on your hardware, it seems to be a little different for everyone.

Anything beyond Multi-sampling level 2 is a waste… this is taken with quality 2 and AF x16 forced from in driver level:
this causes texture shimmering…
-
On NVidia cards using ‘quality’ texture mapping mode fixes shimmer.
In most other cases the quality setting is unnecessary but helps with BMS. -
On my new rig, I set all the settings to max with Multi-Sampling to 7. I do not need to run a M-S of 7 on this game? Runs stable at 60-61 FPS. I get the drops up close with explosions sometimes too, nowhere near 10 FPS though.
Asrock Pro3 Z77
I5 3570K
GTX 660 SC 2Gb 192-bit
8Gb 1600 RAMHow did you get the good looking vapor over the wings. Mine still look like a Pixel-cape over the plane? I WANT THOSE VAPOR SETTINGS!!!
-
i think those are the stock vapor graphics….your just seeing them from the side instead of a top down shot…i could be wrong, but that is most likely a good screenshot, not a new vapor effect.
