Just a question about birds and BMS

@Stevie said :…an F/A-18C hit a flock of 5 pelicans. The birds about took the whole windscreen off the jet, and messed up an intake pretty bad.
Were the pelicans okay…?
-
@Aragorn Yeah, they went to a better place.

They dropped hot, invisible flares and flew away. (camels do the same. And they spit on SA10 missiles inbound.)

@Mav-jp tha’s what I said in an other post. That’ S why this is just a question.
-
Bugs ! A sim is not a sim if you don’t get a bug splattered on your windshield. Even Test Drive in the 80s had them!
-
@Vyper37
Well each sim these days has enough bugs, point is that’s not easy for devs to splatter those little buggers.on the serious note, while I understand it’s gonna be low priority, getting into BMS all those little things that rl pilot has to take into consideration is a huge + for me (including birdstrikes, system/weapons failures etc …)
-
@LorikEolmin it’s not an answer from my question
-
@Mav-jp
it’s a bit of a sad answer… I’m very interested in the operation and development of BMS and I feel like I get a slap every time I ask a question on the forum. I’m trying to understand so as not to ask any more “stupid questions” that make you “waste your time”, it’s not, very constructive… I know you have priority. It’s an evidence.
Please think of those who since childhood would have liked to be in your place. you can’t imagine how “nasty” it can be to read this when your work is appreciated.a more correct answer would have been accompanied by a concrete explanation. “yes it’s possible, by doing this and that.” or "no it’s not possible due to a lack of means/technique/time. (sorry, I was a teacher)
in your place, I would be proud to see people motivated and interested in my work.
It was just à SIMPLE question without any bad intention. Pffff…

Yes! Played it again on Mini.
@Vespa No, just humour.
-
@Vespa - the thing to do would be to look at the global patterns of bird migration and population densities and set up density and behavior patterns similar to how BMS handles weather. That would be a fairly big job, I’d think.
Then it would be up to Viper pilots to see and avoid, like in RL.
OTOH, if there are people that don’t think birds exist in RL, they will probably never believe they exist in virtual life…
-
@Aragorn - No. All five of them died dead, and left a lot of blood all over the jet.
Some place around here I have a picture of some sailors holding one of the carcasses up by the wings - BIG birds.
…on another note, out in Maryland I’ve seen jets hit deer on the takeoff or landing roll…the State is infested with them. THAT makes a mess…

@VIPER-0 I suppose we don’t see them in real flight but that can add some realism. In real life I suppose you can’t do low fly where you want with the risk of bird strike. Near to the beach too, etc…
no brother. I wasn’t questioning your valid question about implementing or simulating birds. my question was why? Some one give you dislike to a valid approach and without any very bad one.
so I gave my good like to your question and proposal. no question is unreasonable or useless who asks it. unless I raise it, then the 2 previous points can be true. greetings. -
@Vespa bro im just wondering about those anwers… Everybody is talking about top notch realism, but when you ask realy good question, you get shit back… here on forum you can see realy stupid post and questions (even from dev guys). There were birds even in super old sim like Hornet 3.0 … I dont get this kind of behavior…
-
Start with random failures and enjoy how it can ruin your evening. You can call it a bird before it’s fully implemented. I just hope it will be implemented after way more important things. Like, just for instance, how the repair teams are dispatched between aircrafts in a squadron to repair, say, from a bird collision and other war damages. Or simply more package control when you’re relying on AI.
Less drama…
-
@Vespa
Not possible (without specific code, 3D model and database implementation).
But it would be great (and realistic). Personally, I would love it.
However, realistic bird strikes would have the same results than dramatic ramdom engine failures. (good for realism, less good for gameplay). -
IF bird strike risk affects real world doctrine for nap of the earth flying, it would be cool to implement. Even without graphics… just {if distance to nearest tree < 200 ft roll dice for 1% chance of engine failure}… lol
But I wonder if it’s so, in wartime. Given a choice of 1% bird strike risk vs 50% increased risk of manpads and radar… probably one would always choose bird strike risk?

If you don’t need visuals, the random failure option could do the job (but it is independent of altitude)
-
Please stop the drama
I believe we have more important stuff to implement in a combat sim that bird strikes !
Don’t take it personally please but BMS is IMO a combat sim first , There are so many fundamental things that are missing big time in the sim right now !!
I juste stated MY opinion which is not the opinion of BMS
As usual if a BMs dev is interested in it , he will be free to do it
To be honnest had had the discussion internally a while ago , to do it properly it would involve
Quite a big amount of’art work and code workWe wouldn’t accept shitty birds
Flying all the time at the same
Defined place like in other sims …Interest of the thing is anyway extremely limited
Again think about more important combat Stuff like dynamic RCS, DL + IR missile modeling , chaff sequence effect modeling , proximity damage better modeling ….and believe me the list can be extremely long before reaching bird strike
-
@airtex2019 - Actually, what is even worse are MANPADs and small arms…which also seem to be under-represented.
-
@Mav-jp I I won’t do drama man, but a good answer It’s a question of respect for me. With a good answer
we can avoid hours of useful discussions or misunderstandings. that’s all. (Sorry for my English)
So, I understand, that’s not priorities.What kind of help BMS team need in his team for the moment ? (Help or people with competence.)
