Can't find my way home…
-
Do you still have a working radio?
Howdy,
I’m currently on pause. (Falcon 4 BMS 4.33u1) I did an OCA and prior to GBU release I got hit by nails and lost all my avionics. HUD, MFD, DED, the works. However I still have my analog flight instruments working and the engine appears to be in good shape. Enough to get me home.
I’ve looked through the documentation but I can’t find anything that really addresses a ship that’s in this particular situation.
So I have my HSI, speed, alt, etc…
1. Is there a way to use the remaining instrumentation to get back to the steer(stear?) points? Is that possible with avionics gone?
2. I know I’m north of the FLOT and Osan. How far I don’t know. How can I use multiple TACAN’s to pinpoint my position?
3. Is there a map or something that I can use to get a known list of TACAN’s that Falcon 4.33u1 supports?
4. Will bringing home the unused GBU’s go back into the inventory for a campaign?
5. Don’t think something like this can’t happen to you.I appreciate any input from the community to help my dire situation.
Thanks,
-Matt

Pass 2 the lead.

This is why it’s important to know “old school” navigation techniques. Mission planning helps too.
-
I believe if you switch from UFC to backup you can use the backup TACAN system. Just input the channel into the analog boxes and use the HSI.
-
I appreciate everyone’s input. I did find the TACAN list in the DOC dir. That helped.
-
You could also select waypoint 0 and NAV steering…and just fly INS direct.
…or steer to the track lines on your HSI.

Very helpful. Thanks.

You can read your geographic coordinates at the DED, go to the Korea Map, and then roughly get your position and consequently the nearest airport bearing.- Thats what I do, when I dont know where I am.-

Yes, Yes it will. But with an Aircraft that Damaged it’s better to Emergency Jettison everything and limp it home. Nobody is going to complain about a few bombs as long as the airframe and Pilot make it back safe and sound.

The issue that I was facing was a complete lack of supporting avionics. Nothing was working except the HSI and backup comms. It was like the cockpit was cold and dark.
Is there a manual or backup way to select a steerpoint without using the DED?
-
If the radio works, ask AWACS for vector to home plate.

If your HOTAS is working - make your HSD the SOI, cursor over the one you want, and go TMS->FWD.

No, in offline SP, you have to rely on radio navigation, or just visual navigation. The modern BMS is visually distinct enough that you should be able to get home with just a compass. Failing that, use TACAN and the HSI.
In multiplayer, assuming radios out, rock your wings till your flight lead recognises your issue, or until you risk an emergency situation by staying with your oblivious lead any longer. Formate on lead until you are back home, or until you break off to go your own way home.

If his HOTAS is working but his MFDs are dead like he explained then that is impossible to do. Exactly the same as selecting waypoints with a dead DED system.

Ok…I’ve been in situations where I had the displays, but the buttons didn’t work, or I couldn’t change radar modes, etc.

1. Go feet wet or cross the flot or go to green zone. In case your aircraft become unflyable and need to ride silk. I,ve used the rwr to NAV to f15 cap flight that I tasked to cover egress.
2. AI comms may still work. Try to rejoin the flight, get visual, return to homeplate commands and follow. -
Flight planning
Before the flight you should plot what’s the best safe heading at different point of the flight.
You should also know which tacan to use in case of such a problem (interactive map-
And be able to use tacans and HSI in BUP mode (BMS Dash1 & checks)In Korea, basically your safe heading will be something around 180°
Yangju Vortac 96X is one of the closest to the demarcation line with a decent range. You can use that to navigate back to friendly territory. Then with the interactive map you can plot a new rough heading to an airbase until you have it visual.
Or use their tacan to navigate there.
There is no real penalty point to land NORDO (no comms) in BMS but if you want to push it and do it right, set the frequency of the airport you’re diverting (interactive map again) in the BUP UHF and initiate commsWelcome home
The situation you found yourself in is because it’s a sim and we step unprepared - which is fine
But there is nothing like the feeling of completeness when that happens to you and you are able to bring back the jet on your own -

Sorry OP for the crass reply earlier, I just had the same thing happen to me while practicing with the TFR. I got fragged by ground fire and had a generator failure thus losing the entire electrical system. Radios seemed dead on backup as well. After jetting the stores had to eyeball landmarks and watch the compass/clock/airspeed with a chart on a tablet to get home. I find myself wishing I had a systems diagram to get an idea how to config the radios to run on battery power. Least the gear came down on command, but the CO isn’t going to be happy about all the bullet holes I came home with.
I forgot home much I love this sim.Am looking at the power distribution diagram for the block 50 / 52 HAF, and the UHF radio is powered directly off the battery bus no.1, and the HUD, INS, IFF is powered by the emergency AC bus no.2, right off the EPU.
*shrug
Electrical panel needs more modelling ???
