NVG fix U2

for any reason after U2 the minimun ambient light was set to 0.01, that means the night is totally dark and NVG can’t capture enought light.
go to Falcon BMS 4.35\Config search for the falconbms.cfg file (MAKE A BACKUP FIRST), edit with notepad++ and search for the line #90, it looks like this “g_fAmbientmin 0.01”, set to 0.10 and save it, try a night mission

It was set that way on purpose. Not good for cockpit but NVG are not focused inside, but outside. BATT switch? Keyboard. Bandits seeing magically without NVG or even with NVG (try…) : not sure.

Spotlight only works after you’ve turned the BATT on, though. What we need are finger lights.

you seem to miss the point of it
The ambient light has been adjusted because now it’s dependant on MOON
as in real, moon is a key factor of night mission preparation : no moon and flying by night is more difficult
the ambiant light is dependant on moon elevation and phases of course
moon and stars ephemeris are 100% accurate so for proper mission preparation look at your calendar date and use dedicated website to see what moon will be and at what time.
if you dont like realism you can of course adjust your settings like you did
that way everyone is happy

Real world the pilot would have a flashlight or lip light, probably NVG green these days… …which I guess in it’s own way NVGs simulate currently even though they shouldn’t due to the focus issues. But even as a work around, the BMS NVGs with a dark night are harder to see switches than a real life light.

If we are going for realism a flashlight with a red or green filter would be better save the night vision or how about the option to change the filter from white to green or red.

I think any one that has NVGs today is going to be green, not as friendly to your natural adjusted night vision as red, but red is I think just as glaring as white under NVGs. So you have white for preflight or times you need to see actual colors and NVG friendly green for look under the NVGs in the cockpit (remember not using NVGs to look inside IRL). Red might still be handy to have for historic aircraft pre-NVGs.

Does helmet have its own battery pack (in RL) or is it plugged into a/c for power?
It seems odd to me that helmet-mounted NVG works without batt, but a simple $2 flashlight wouldn’t.

Other way around, NVGs are battery powered with their own packs, normally mounted in the back of the helmet as a counterweight. The “spotlight” in BMS is simulating the adjustable white light spotlights that are a bit of a legacy thing in modern cockpits in some ways since they are too bright for NVGs. IIRC the spotlight is by the “towel rack” arm rest on the right side, can’t remember if there is one on the left. I’ll see if I can find some pictures.
EDIT: It’s actually mounted behind the towel rack above the inlet anti-ice panel but is movable with a clamp:

That website shows what I believe is two versions with one having a lot more controls for dimming and spot vs flood. But in general, at least Mav-JP is open to making that call back act more as a flashlight with its own power than the “spotlight” hooked up to aircraft power.

Not sure about combat ops if apron light etc. would be on, but in peace time, yes there is probably enough light and tacticle feedback to find the switches you want in position before interior lighting line air source, eng feed, and batt/power.
While what you are saying about NVGs to work does hold some truth if it is a overcast and moonless night somewhat, again we should start to get out of the mindset of using the NVGs to look inside. Probably all 4.35 will be fine, but if a future release is doing things right, when you look inside everything will be blurry in the NVGs because as I understand it you set the focus before you even get into the jet and don’t touch it. When looking inside you look under the NVGs to look at MFDs, locate switches, etc. To see how this should work, unfortunately check out DCS.
